World 2 00 THE COUNTY TICKET. The county convention, which concluded its labors yesterday, has done its work undoubtedly with sat isfaction to the great body of Bo publicans throughout the county. There was such an abundance of igood material from which to choose that a mistake could hardly be made. Aside from the natural rivalry which is present ou such occasions, the con tention passed off harmoniously, and no traces of bitterness are felt on the part of the defeated candidates. The men whose names appear on "the countv ticket have won their honors honorably, and the defeated ones may take a large measure of satisfaction in the showing they made. Especially is this true re garding the contest for the sheriff's office, when both Sheriff Driver and Deputy 'Sheriff Kelly had large and enthusiastic followings. The suc cessful contestant can count upon the united suppoic of the party. The re-nomination by acclamation of County Clerk A. M. Keisay was a graceful tribute to that gentleman's -worth and conduct while occupying this office. Mr. Kelsay's election will follow as a matter of course. Against C. L. Fnillips, the nom inee for treasurer, not a word can be said, He has performed the duties o? his office with exactness and fidel ity, and deserves a re election, as he did a re-nomination The administration of County School Superintendent C. L. Gilbert is worthy of the highest praise. He has made a conscientious, obliging official, and the people will give a hearty endorsement to his official career. The fact that there was no opposi tion to W, H. Whipple for assessor and J. B. Goit for surveyor shows that these gentlemen have been deemed to have so filled the require ments of their positions that no word of complaint can be said. They will poll the entire party vote, and this will insure their election. N. C. Evans, of Hood River, the candidate for commissioner, is a well-known farmer in that vicinity, in every way qualified for the duties of the office. It has been the custom so long to elect W. II. Butts coroner that it will not be broken this year, and his election will follow as a thing of cer tainty. The delegates elected to the -state canvention aie representative Re publicans, who can be counted upon to make worthy nominations for dis trict oftlces and members of the leg islature. Altogether the ticket nominated is ft strong one, and the fusion forces way well look foi ward to the ides of June with much misgiving. The absence of important inform ation from Washington today indi eatee that the president is acting iispa the request of General Lee to defer bit message until Monday. In vicar of the faet that the American miaVaU lin Cuba eanaot be trnns- lya'ciea" before the end of the week, the delay ia probably imperative; but the question arises, why was not this natter brought about several days ago? War has been imminent ever since it was known what the re port on the sinking of the Maine would be, and it was the part of wisdom to seo that no complications such as the present one could have arisen. The next governor of the state of Oregon will bo T. T. Gecr. The politicians cannot down him, and he will break any slato which they put up in opposition. Geer is the choice of the people, and will poll a heavy vote in all portions of tho state. With him at tho head of the Repub lican ticket the defeat of fusion will be certain None but the best men should be nominated by the Repub lics this year, and against Geor's candidacy not a word can be said. litvlnir I'rofreny of Fish. A doubt that has troubled scientists for years whether there exists a vivi parous kind of iish, one that gives birth to its young1 in n living state was defi nitely settled in the afllrmative the other clay, when the city hull fountain of tho capital of Arizona territory was "cleaned out. In tuni!?i ho water put of the big cemented basin, where a gold fish variety of the carp family has long disported itself for the edlfleatidn of the Phoenix nurse girl and the Mari copa count hobo, it was found that many of the llsh had given birth to pro geny fully formed and ready to dart in search of food at the moment of com ing into their watery world. Others had given birth to tiny creatures that were globular in shape, except for the protruding eyes and nascent tail fin, that could scarcely be seen without a strong glass. From all the evidences, it was clear that the clean-up had been made during the breeding season, yet there was no sign of fish roc or eggs. Jinny specimens of the strnnge young fish were collected, and will be shipped to different experts, one lot going to the Smithsonian- institution. Chicago Times-Herald.
